This is a shadow box picture frame for displaying objects and memorabilia.
These frames are made by me in my framing workshop, from wooden frame mouldings, with matching wooden spacers (both of which are FSC certified) They are fitted with acrylic glazing, a reversable mount board, which you could also cover with a thin material of your own choice and a separate backboard. The frame has a hanger for hanging on a screw or nail or they are quite happy free standing. The hanger can be positioned anywhere along the length of any side so it can be hung vertically, horizontally or offset to allow for an unevenly weighted piece being mounted.
I have made them in such a way that the spacer has glued, mitred corners and is assembled in one piece, individually made for each frame. This means that the spacer has no unsightly gaps and can be removed for cleaning, glazing replacement etc.
Sizes:
The sizes shown are the external dimensions, the frame is 28mm wide so the viewing dimensions are 28mm smaller all round. ie: for a 250mm x 250mm frame, the viewing aperture is 194mm x 194mm.
The spacer is 25mm wide. The distance between the underside of the glazing and the mount board is 25mm, so the object being mounted can be no thicker than this.
Materials:
The frame materials and the spacers are made from FSC certified timber. This frame and spacer is made from a bare wood called Ayous, which is also known as Obech. It's a close grained softwood which accepts stains and varnishes very well. If you plan to paint or stain the frame yourself, choose the "Natural" colour and please put "NO OIL" in the notes.
The mount board and backboard are made from acid free materials. The cream/off white is a two sided board. The charcoal/white and sand/white have a white back which could be used. You could also paste a piece of your own paper to it! The frame package is held in place by flexible tabs and the glazing is 2mm optically clear acrylic, it 2mm glass of you're collecting.
The frame is cut and assembled on professional frame making equipment using stacked V-Nails and glue on the guillotine cut corners.
